A Dreamy Winter Getaway
There is a time every winter — typically after the holidays wind down and a significant stretch of cold weather sits firmly between us and spring — that I long to escape. We’re often trapped in the house, which somehow magically shrinks in size compared to warmer months. We are or have been sick or have taken care of sick kids. The pharmacy line has been our second home. The messes pile up faster (thanks Christmas crap we didn’t actually need) There are more layers and laundry. There is shoveling and scraping. There are more bills. We are tired. We are weary. We are ready to escape.
And by we, I mean both us as a collective of mothers and my husband and I. As much as jetting to a tropical island would do the trick, logistics usually don’t align (see above on more bills), but the good news is that a reset and restorative pause can be achieved in closer, more affordable and equally peaceful destinations. I found such a gem a few years back — and am excited to share it with you.
The Captain Freeman Inn in Brewster, MA is truly a magical place to visit any time of year. The restored Sea Captain’s mansion is within walking distance to stunning Breakwater Beach, though you don’t have to leave the property to feel relaxed and renewed. Owners Laurie and Jason Stuehmer have used their combined 24 years of experience in the Boston hospitality world to create an exquisite seaside sanctuary. There is much to love about this Inn, but here are our top reasons it makes the perfect winter getaway.
The Dreamy Details
Winter isn’t so bad when you’re hanging out in a cozy and charming setting with no interest in leaving. The Captain Freeman Inn provides just that with intricately designed rooms (Laurie’s background includes interior decorating) and gorgeous details at every turn.
When I first explored the Inn, I couldn’t get over the beauty that followed me in every room. Glass-stained windows, whimsical chandeliers and fresh flowers greeted me on each floor.
Laurie and Jason are all about elegant extras (that are complimentary!) Guests enjoy artisan soaps, lavender spritzers and sachets, plus sea bath salts, made in their own kitchen. Coffee, tea and filtered water is available 24 hours a day. Infused waters and sweets are available every afternoon. You can enjoy these homemade goodies while taking in an adorable assortment of china tea cups that line a wall covered in bright, whimsical floral wallpaper. These gorgeous design “moments” pop up throughout the Inn.
A Year-Round Outdoor Pool
A truly amazing winter getaway allows you to get outside and that’s exactly what the Inn’s stunning outdoor saltwater pool at the Inn does. Amply heated, you’ll feel toasty warm with fresh air on your face and enjoy a relaxing trickle of the pool’s water fall. There’s also a custom fire pit in the pool area and luxurious bathrobes provided in your rooms for when you’re ready to dry off.
Three-Course Gourmet Breakfast
The Captain Freeman smells amazing at all the times. This is partly because of the fresh flowers and Cape Cod products — and also partly from the sweet treats and gourmet breakfasts being prepared every day. Guests enjoy a three-course breakfast made with high quality and locally insources ingredients to start their day.
